Lohr Successfully Implements SAP EWM with support from HRC Software

Transportation & Rail · SAP EWM

A migration to SAP S/4HANA 2021, five stores running SAP EWM, and three entities set to go live on the same day. Lohr entrusted the migration to HRC Software: a single custom development project and approximately 70 operators trained before the go-live on January 5, 2026.

1,500  employees
6 factories
3 entities to go live simultaneously
70 users to be trained before go-live

From AS400 to SAP S/4HANA, with SAP EWM to manage the warehouse

Lohr, a French industrial group founded in 1963, designs and manufactures car carriers, rail systems, and electric mobility solutions, and is active in the defense sector through Soframe. By migrating its core system from an AS400 environment to SAP S/4HANA 2021, the group deployed SAP EWM Advanced across all warehouses at its Duppigheim site. The challenge was to make EWM truly usable by about 100 field operators from day one.

Challenges

Mobile Usage: A Prerequisite for the Adoption of EWM

Ergonomics The standard RF did not win over the teams during user testing.
End users About 100 operators working 2×8 and 3×8 shifts, to be trained in short sessions.
Cost of Custom Work Specific Fiori applications are expensive to develop and maintain.
Tight schedule Three entities to be launched simultaneously, without interrupting logistics operations.

Solution

100% EWM-standard mobile apps

Following a site visit and a proof of concept (POC) using its own data, Lohr selected HRC Warehouse for its mobility solution, working directly with the software vendor. Based on standard EWM processes, the applications provide:

  • Receiving, putaway, picking, replenishment, inventory, shipping, and internal transfers on Zebra TC51 terminals.
  • No additional infrastructure required: no servers to manage, with installation completed in 24 to 48 hours. A single custom development: control of the Kardex automated storage tower via the standard “Custom Button” mechanism.
  • Cascading training: nine key users trained by the software vendor, who then trained their teams.
  • HRC Software staff were on-site at the warehouse for two weeks during the initial rollout, working alongside the operators.
Results

Three entities launched simultaneously

  • A smooth go-live: launch on January 5, 2026, for Lohr Industrie, Lohr Services, and Soframe; hypercare completed in 11 days.
  • Rapid adoption: approximately 70 users trained in 1.5-hour sessions, followed by a second wave of 20 users in March 2026.
  • A consistent standard: only one specific test to be repeated during version upgrades, with maintenance and enhancements included in the license.
  • In-house expertise: Key users train new employees themselves.

Lohr is now exploring the expansion of mobile access to maintenance, warehouses managed under SAP IM, and production.
